Since January 2019, Capt. Joe DePete has served as the eleventh president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), which represents nearly 63,000 professional airline pilots in the United States and Canada and is the largest nongovernmental aviation safety organization in the world.
As ALPA’s president, Capt. DePete serves as the Association’s chief executive and administrative officer and spokesman. He also serves as a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council and is a member of the International Committee as well as the Legislative and Policy Committee.
Capt. DePete also serves on the Federal Aviation Administration’s NextGen Advisory Committee and Drone Advisory Committee, and led an aviation industry initiative to collaborate with the commercial space industry on operational integration and safety enhancements.
A graduate of St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, DePete proudly served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he flew Lockheed KC-130s for Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron #252 while stationed at Cherry Point, N.C.
Before his presidency, Capt. DePete served as ALPA first vice president and national safety coordinator, overseeing the Association’s Air Safety Organization, which manages the union’s Safety, Security, Pilot Assistance, and Jumpseat programs.
